A Terracotta Red Clay tile with a heavily textured aged appearance. We recommend these tiles should be laid by eye (no use of spacers), and have a minimal joint of 5-8mm to achieve the desired rustic effect. Due to the nature of these natural terracotta tiles the tile sizes can vary.

Once the Terradine Terracotta is fixed, it should be sealed with Linseed Oil. Two coats are ideal to create a barrier to protect the surface against staining. Once sealed with oil they should be left to dry and not walked on. Once dry, the tiles can be grouted. It's best to grout a small area at a time; cleaning as you go. When you've finished the grouting, the floor should be left to dry. Once dry, Mylands Wax should be applied to the floor to create an additional, traditional protective barrier. A second or third coat of wax can be applied to add shine to the floor. Additional waxing should be done from time to time to maintain the protective barrier.

Fitting externally: If you're placing your tiles outdoors, we recommend applying several coats of LTP Mattstone Sealer beforehand.

The Terradine Natural Terracotta tile range is hand made and very traditional, they vary in shade and texture, many will have imperfections that are part of traditional characteristic of the natural clay, and natural imperfections will include surface flaws and minor cracks these should be used in a project to create a floor that will look old and rustic.

Question logo
Hi are these completely unglazed/uncoated?
julia georgallis | 14 Jan 2020
Answer logo
Hi Julia

Yes, these tiles are completely natural and have no form of pre-seal, glaze or coating. The would require sealing on installation using the traditional method of Linseed oil and wax (for internal use only) or the synthetic method of clear sealer and liquid wax finish:

Question logo
Hi can you use the mattstone sealer as a final coat on kitchen floors as a alternative to the wax recommended .

Pamela | 18 Aug 2019
Answer logo
Hi Pamela

The Mattstone is an impregnating sealer which is designed to sink into the tile. With terracotta being extremely porous and the rate at which the Mattstone will sink in, we would recommend applying an additional finishing coat, using the LTP Ironwax in Satin or Gloss after the initial seal of Mattstone, depending on the required finish. Unlike normal wax, this is in liquid form and can easily be applied by brush, roller or cloth:

Question logo
Hi - I would really like a herringbone terracotta tile floor in my new kitchen. However, I like the natural matt finish of terracotta and would not want them to be shiny at all. Are these tiles still suitable? If yes, what finish should I use? (NB: the terracotta floor in the photo you show above is far too shiny for me and I would hate them to look like this...!) Thanks for your help.
Jonathan | 27 Apr 2019
Answer logo
Hi Jonathan

These tiles will be fine. There are many different ways to seal Terracotta depending on the finish you require. However, if you wish to keep the natural matt appearance, you could coat them in several coats of the LTP Mattstone H20.

Terracotta is extremely porous and it is important to check that the tiles are fully protected before grouting. A further coat after grouting can be applied to ensure the surface is sufficiently sealed and will also seal the grout at the same time.

Question logo
1) I'm laying these on an existing polished tile surface, and am concerned that the undersides of the terracottas are very porous, and perhaps ought to be lealed with, say, diluted PVA before laying in the adhesive to prevent them drying it out too quickly
2) Should there be a coat of linseed oil applied after grouting (as well as before) and before waxing?
Chris Lousley | 30 Apr 2018
Answer logo
Hi Chris,

Firstly we do not recommend PVA in tiling as the acetic acid is formed when PVA comes into contact with Portland Cement can affect the hydration and overall bond strength of the adhesive.

The backs of the tiles does not require sealing but we would recommend back spreading each tile with adhesive as you lay them, as well as spreading the adhesive on the floor. This is to ensure there are no air pockets/voids beneath the tiles and to give them a better bond strength.

We recommend sealing with linseed oil both before and after grouting. Before to stop the tiles staining during the grouting process and after to seal the grout and ensure the sealer within the tile is fully sufficient before the finishing coat of wax is applied.

The polished surface is a concern. This may require some treatment before tiling onto, in the form of a slurry coat of SBR primer and cement based adhesive. But if you wish to discuss your project in more detail, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to assist you.

Question logo
Hi, could these be used for outdoor paving? Many thanks
S. Read | 15 Nov 2017
Answer logo
Hello and thank you for your enquiry,

These are a natural terracotta clay so can be used externally. They will require sealing with multiple coats of the LTP MattStone H2O (link below) both before and after grouting to make them resistant to staining and wet weather conditions.

Kind regards
