3 -- Tiles suggested for all residential floors; light to moderate traffic areas only, e.g. bathrooms, halls, kitchens, living rooms and wall applications.

A Terracotta Red Clay tile with a heavily textured aged appearance. We recommend these tiles should be laid by eye (no use of spacers), and have a minimal joint of 5-8mm to achieve the desired rustic effect. Due to the nature of these natural terracotta tiles the tile sizes can vary.

Once the Terradine Terracotta is fixed, it should be sealed with Linseed Oil. Two coats are ideal to create a barrier to protect the surface against staining. Once sealed with oil they should be left to dry and not walked on. Once dry, the tiles can be grouted. It's best to grout a small area at a time; cleaning as you go. When you've finished the grouting, the floor should be left to dry. Once dry, Mylands Wax should be applied to the floor to create an additional, traditional protective barrier. A second or third coat of wax can be applied to add shine to the floor. Additional waxing should be done from time to time to maintain the protective barrier.

The Terradine Natural Terracotta tile range is hand made and very traditional, they vary in shade and texture, many will have imperfections that are part of traditional characteristic of the natural clay, and natural imperfections will include surface flaws and minor cracks these should be used in a project to create a floor that will look old and rustic.

what is the difference between Terracotta and Quarry tiles and which is best for kitchen
din | 15 Jun 2019
Answer logo
Hi Din

Both Terracotta and quarry tiles are made from similar clays. However, the way they are processed with the compression of the clay and being fired at higher temperatures makes the quarry tiles more moisture resistant and durable than natural terracotta. They are also more uniform in appearance whereas the natural terracotta will be slightly varied in size, texture and colour, giving a far more rustic aesthetic.

We would recommend obtaining samples of both before making your final decision, but if you wish to discuss your project in more detail or to arrange samples or a quotation, please call our Sales team on 01536 314730 or request a call-back via the link below, and they will be more than happy to help you.

Hello, what's the best way to cut these tiles to size, i've not worked with terracotta before. Thanks, Johnny
Mr Johnny Stephens | 3 Jan 2019

Hi Johnny,

Terracotta tiles require cutting with an electric cutter with a diamond wheel. This can be an angle grinder, or a wet tile saw:

Question logo
Im thinking of using these for a fireplace - would they be suitable to the potential heat and what does the edge of the tile look like - I will need to place them on an edge so the side tile will be exposed
Russell | 2 Mar 2018
Answer logo
Hi Russell

Terracotta has a natural resistance to heat, which means they can be used for a hearth and heated areas. These tiles are handmade and the exposed edges a quite rough. Due to the thickness, instead of using a trim, we'd suggest lightly sanding the edges to leave them as neat as possible, or create a frame from a material of your choosing to cloak the edges to a sufficient depth.

Please tell me the size of each tile.
Ted | 5 Jan 2018
Answer logo
Hi Ted,

The nominal size of each tile is 150x150x20mm. However being handmade the sizes can vary.
