3 Quick Tips When Choosing A Colour Scheme

If you’re decorating in the near future and want to add a dash of colour into your home, then here are our top tips to get the best out of your colour scheme…

1. The Colour Wheel

The Colour wheel is a tool for showing the relationship between different colours. It’s perfect for helping you decide your designs colour scheme. The colour wheel lays out the colours in a natural gradient and forms a great visual as to which colours fit together.
Once you pick a main colour, the colour directly opposite will be the best option as a secondary / complementary colour. However, this rule is not set in stone and you can move one step either side of the secondary colour on the colour wheel for a slight variation, or even two steps across (this is known as triad colours as the three points on the wheel will form a triangle when joined).
The colour wheel is perfect for deciding what colours will complement any art or furniture or accessories you may have in the home (i.e. a sofa)

2. The 60-30-10 rule

60-30-10. Keep these percentages in mind! If you are choosing a colour scheme, aim for 60% of your main colour, 30% of a complementary colour and then 10% of an accent colour. If you look at most room designs (or any designs with more than one colour) you will likely notice the 60-30-10 rule. It’s the perfect balance for the eye and enhances whichever room you are decorating.

For example, below, the pink wall tiles make up 60%, the blue backing makes up 30%, and the golden accessories make up 10%.

3. Lighter colour scheme equals larger

Use light colours in small spaces to increase the illusion of space. By inviting whites, creams and pale greys into a small room, you’ll make it seem larger, brighter, and more refreshed in appearance. Ceilings that are lighter than the walls will make the wall look taller, too!
