Brave Ground™: Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2021

Dulux has announced its new Colour of the Year for 2021, named ‘Brave Ground™’.

A warm toned neutral, Dulux describes this natural hue as ‘a bolstering shade that connects back to nature and the simple things,’ and ‘a warm, earthy tone, [that] creates a feeling of stability, growth and potential; and provides a firm foundation for change and creativity in your home.’

I want to delve into the key emotion behind Brave Ground, and to understand why this colour is a positive addition to your home environment.

The mind behind Brave Ground™

To boil Brave Ground down to its bare minimum, it is a gorgeous warm toned brown with a hint of beige. The word beige in the eyes of colour psychology connotes simplicity, flexibility and foundation. It is no wonder that beige is a staple for many interior designers in it accentuating other colours.

Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux furthers this assertion, as she describes it to be ‘trustworthy and supportive of all the other colours in the spectrum.’

Not only this, but Brave Ground™ is responsive to light in different scenarios; it shifts and changes hue depending on time of day, and room. Marianne explains that when using this paint colour on walls in the home, we’ll see hints of pink coming through in the morning, but at night it’s quite dark and powdery.

She particularly suggests Brave Ground™ as a shade for the living room with its feeling of stability and warmth helping connote a great place to relax and unwind after a day at work.

As mentioned in our blog on Green as a trending colour, Lockdown in the UK is a heavy influence on current interior trends. Feelings of warmth, stability, strength and nurture are integral to a comfortable and safe home environment, and Brave Ground™ offers just that.

Colour Palettes for 2021

Alongside Brave Ground™, Dulux has announced four new colour palettes for 2021 that incorporate this hero shade.

From bold pinks, to tranquil blues, Dulux have forecast a mixture of trends to revive your home design, with a lick of paint. But how can you introduce and follow this interior trend forecast in other ways?

Well, I’ve compiled a mixture of tiles for walls and floors that complement and adhere to these colourways to bring you artistic inspiration for your next home project.

The Colour in Question

Coast Seashell

Bring Brave Ground™ to your bathroom with our Coast Seashell Tiles. Their warm, brown hue is reminiscent of Brave Ground™, yet tiles are a durable and splash-proof option for walls. Pair with moss green for a relaxing haven to unwind in.

Blengdale Natural Wood Effect

These soft-touch wood tiles are a great comfort to your home – and your feet! Their warm beige huge is perfect for bringing Brave Ground™ inspiration to your living room, and paired with natural hues they really are a standout feature.

Kutlu Beige Mix

For the bolder interior advocates among you, our Kutlu Beige Tiles are a great choice for a striking statement. Above, we have paired them with delicate neutrals in a tiled rug format for a practical yet characterful feature. Coordinate with Brave Ground™ on the walls for a warm toned theme we love for cosy autumn nights.

Natural Inspirations

Marron Glass Brick Tiles

These wooden-effect tiles are something different for your home. Their glass finish is reflective and glossy, whilst their wood-look colour is a twist on a traditional brick tile. Pair with Brave Ground™ by using them as a kitchen splashback for a country vibe with a modern twist, and decorate with other woods to complement the theme.

Stacked Sand Stone Effect Tiles

These stone-effect tiles are perfect for cosy, country vibes. Above, they are gorgeous with dark toned leathers and rustic wooden features. With Brave Ground™, we’re feeling an autumnal cabin aesthetic in the comfort of your living room!

Complementing Coral

Craquelure Living Coral

Contrasting colours are in, and we love rich corals with warm browns for a ‘pop’ of something different. Pair these glossy slightly crackled tiles with Brave Ground™ and some potted plants for a bright and summery home, all year round.

Metro St. Pauls Red Gloss

If darker vibes are your thing, these sultry red tiles would look incredible with Brave Ground™ for a vixen kitchen. Add gold metallic accents for the ultimate allure to wow your guests with autumnal tones.

Earthly tones

Rustic Blue Reclaimed Wood Tiles

Far from flotsum and jetsum, reclaimed wood effect tiles are a gorgeous addition to make a room feel more rustic. The subtle blue in these tiles is perfect for introducing earthly colours to a palette of browns and beiges, whilst keeping the colour subtle.

Raku Blue

Inspired by ancient Japanese firing methods, Raku tiles have an undulating soft gloss finish for a spectacular textured finish. Lighting alters their glow, so paired with responsive Brave Ground™ in a bathroom setting with some foliage, the natural world would be mimicked wonderfully.

Aquarelle Pistachio Green

Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2020 is rather similar to these gorgeous muted aqua tiles, so why not combine trends of the past few years for a fresh twist on trends. Brave Ground™ would look stunning combined with these tiles in a kitchen, accented with woods and chromes for a modern but approachable family space.
