Spruce up your Living Areas: 4 Weeks!

This year, in the build-up to Christmas, Walls and Floors are giving you weekly guides on how to transform your home, one room at a time. We want to help you get those interiors ready for your festive guests. We’ve already taken a look at Finding Your Perfect Style, Refreshing Your Bathroom, and Cooking Up A Festive Kitchen. This week, we’re looking at rejuvenating those living areas.

It’s an important place – the lounge. When our guests come round, it’s a place we like to entertain; lounging around on the sofas, with our glasses and nipples set down on the coffee table. But on a day-to-day basis, the living room is a place to cuddle up and relax into front of the TV. So it’s important we look after our living area interiors, and keep them fresh and up-to-date. That doesn’t have to mean a huge renovation project, or replacing the expensive three-piece suite. We can simply change the design of the flooring, or swap old accessories for newer ones, which are more in-line with the latest trends.

With 4 weeks left until Christmas Day, we’re going to take a look at how to visually warm up your lounges by introducing rich wood effects. We’ll also look at how to revive those fireplaces. We’ll show you how to dress a window, and we’ll go through the latest accessories and living room trends!

Warm up with wood effect

Wood effect tiles are a great way to introduce a rich, warm new look to an interior area. Consisting of gorgeous golds and browns, they are perfect for turning up the visual temperature of a room. Unlike natural wood, wood effect tiles don’t mark and scratch as easily, and they don’t require all the bothersome treatment and maintenance. With the use of high definition printing, wood effect tiles now look as realistic as natural wood!

These rustic oak tiles are alive with knots, grooves and a lifelike wood-grain design. Rich in colour, they are perfect for transforming a lounge or sitting area!

Create the illusion of a beautifully reclaimed wooden floor by introducing parquet effect tiles, such as these Rovere Tiles from our Louisa Charlotte Collection. Dark in colour, they bring a rustic appearance to a floor space.

Piece together a stunning statement floor with decorative wood effect tiles. Above, we’ve featured our Estrellar Wood Effect Tiles. Again, they have a rich, warming effect.

Relighting the fireplace

The fireplace can act as the perfect centrepiece in a living room. Too often, you’ll walk into a friend’s lounge and find that the television is the focal point. An enormous black screen. What’s so appealing about that? When decorated in the right way, a fireplace can have much more character. It’s a part of the design of your home – use it!

Nothing makes us feel more cosy inside than a flaming, crackling fire in the winter. But if burning chopped logs isn’t your style, there are other options available. There are lots of sleek and stylish electric fires on the market, with realistic flame effect displays. They give you both the heat, and the illusion of a roaring fire. They’re a lot safer if you have children around.

If you’re happy with your fire, but it’s the dated, drab or decaying decor of the fireplace that needs changing, then tiles are your best option. Stylish, easy to install, and heat resistant, certain tiles are perfect for transforming the look of an aging fireplace. We find that slate effect splitface tiles are a winning decorative option.

If you have an empty, disused fireplace and don’t want to fork out on introducing a heat source, there are other ways you can transform the space into a stylish focal point. For one, you could ask your friends if they have any old, unwanted books, or pop down to the local charity shop and acquire some. Then, once you have a good amount, simply stack them in the hollow of the fireplace. It will add a unique, interesting, artistic twist to your living room interior. Alternatively, you could fill the space with chopped logs. A huge interior trend right now is the idea of inviting raw materials, such as wood or stone, into your home.
