QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (24)
Could you please tell me the shelf life of the Kwik Grip Ice White.
Many thanks,
Tony Fuller.
Thanks for your query.
The correct adhesive will depend on several factors including what tiles are on the wall, what tiles you want to fint, how many sqm you are tiling etc... It may be best to call our sales team on 01536 314730 for more details.
Kind regards
Walls and Floors
I am a domestic customer who is about to tile over existing ceramic wall tiles in a kitchen. The existing 100 x 100mm tiles are sound and most have a matt glaze with the odd tile having a gloss glazed image. My new tiles are standard 200 x 100mm glazed ceramic (purchased from Walls & Floors).
I notice that your web site points me to Kwik Grip Ice White adhesive (which appears to indicate that it can be used on existing ceramic tiles). Would you recommend that I use a primer beforehand and if so, which one? I am keen not to get anything that is too rapid as I am not a professional tiler!
Can you help me please?
This adhesive is fine for fixing tiles onto existing tiles. The most important things to consider are that firstly, the existing tiles a secure (any loose tiles should be removed) and secondly, they must be completely clean and free from grease/oil. To clean, a good scrub with the LTP Grimex will do the trick. Once they are rinsed and dry, no further primer or preparation is required, as the adhesive is polymer modified so will stick to both matt and gloss finishes.
When tiling onto impervious surfaces such as existing tiles, this can extend the drying time of the adhesive. Although the tiles will be set, it can take a longer period of time to release all its moisture, and as such, would recommend that the tiles are left for a minimum of 3 days before grouting.

It depends on the maximum potential temperature of where the tiles are being installed. This adhesive is suitable for use up to 90 degrees, which from experience, electric fire surrounds rarely reach due to the way the heat is directed. But if the temperature is likely to get hotter, we would recommend the Palace Heat Resist adhesive:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/palace-heat-resistant-tile-adhesive-10-kg
If possible, run the appliance and attach a thermometer to the intended area, and monitor the temperature before making your final decision.

It depends on the size of tile and the trowel notch size you will be applying with. But you can expect to achieve 5-7 sqm per bucket.

I'm tiling 300x100x8mm ceramic tiles, mostly onto HardieBackerboard, but some onto new plaster. This is a shower enclosure but will not be in constant use. Is this product suitable. The information on the tub suggests that it is but having reviewed some forums there are a lot of people suggesting that ready mix is not adequate for shower areas.
Thanks,
Ian
Ready mixed adhesives come in two classifications; D1 which is suitable for showers and intermittently wet areas such as bathrooms and domestic showers. D2, which this adhesive is, is also suitable for intermittently wet areas but is also flexible so that they can be used with power-showers. Although it is the preferred option by some professional tilers, cement based adhesives (such as our Stand-Flex) are only essential when fixing porcelain or natural stone, or any tile including ceramics 300x300 or larger.
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-standard-flex-white-tile-adhesive
For any shower area, we also recommend waterproofing the substrates with a suitable tanking system such as the Ardex WPC:

Regards
Walls And Floors
Our Kwik Grip Ice White Wall Tile Adhesive would be fine to use on the wall that you are wishing to tile.
We would recommend using our Bal Waterproofing Kit https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/bal-tile-tools-prep-maintenance-wp1-waterproof-shower-kit each pack covers 4.5sqm.
We have a Gloss and Matt tile in the same range as the Tundra Satin White Liner tile, please see the links https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/tundra-freedom-tiles-gloss-white-medium-tiles https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/tundra-freedom-tiles-matt-white-medium-tiles

This adhesive can be used for installing porcelain tiles on walls up to 150x150mm in size, so fine for use on porcelain mosaics.
If you intend to lay the mosaics on a floor, we would advise the Stand Flex cement based adhesive:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-standard-flex-white-tile-adhesive
Regards
Walls And Floors
This adhesive is suitable for installing wall tiles no larger than 300x300 on to almost any surface, including existing wall tiles. However there is an element of risk as the success of the installation depends on on the surface the old tiles are stuck to and of course, how well they are adhered. So although it can be done, we would always recommend removing the existing tiles.
Regards
Walls And Floors
Thanks
We do not recommend any adhesive for painted walls. The issue is that the moisture from the adhesive will soften the paint which is likely to cause it to de-bond from the wall with the weight of the tile. Therefore the paint must be fully stripped before installation.
However this adhesive will be suitable for the metro tiles on either bare plaster or plasterboard, or a suitable tile backer board.

Walls And Floors
With this adhesive, providing the plaster has had sufficient time to dry, priming is not required. Unless the plaster is extremely porous, in which case we would recommend priming with a diluted coat of Palace Tilers Primer:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-preparation-products-palace-tilers-primer-1-litre
Regards
Walls And Floors
Due to the moisture content, we would not recommend this for Mirror tiles/mosaics. To ensure no reaction occurs with the backing we would recommend fixing and grouting with the Mapei Kerapoxy Design:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/mapei-kerapoxy-design
Regards
Walls And Floors
This adhesive can be used direct to most existing surfaces including plaster and plaster board without the need for a primer. New plaster should be lightly sanded to remove the shiny smooth surface. This will allow a better key for the adhesive to adhere. Once cleaned, you can apply a diluted coat of the recommended Palace SBR Tilers Primer at a ratio of 1:3 with water. Leave to thoroughly dry before tiling:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-preparation-products-palace-tilers-primer-1-litre
Alternatively if you wish to use an acrylic primer, we also have the BAL Prime APD:

Regards,
Walls and Floors
Although it is suitable for fixing glass tiles, we would not recommend it fixing tiles to a smooth glass surface. The recommendation from all manufacturers is to remove the glass and tile onto the main substrate. However the best solution that has been tried before by previous customer, [although we cannot guarantee the level of success due to many variables], is to degrease the glass, and prime with a slurry coat of SBR primer mixed with an S1 powdered adhesive 1:1, leave to dry then tile with the same adhesive:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-preparation-products-palace-tilers-primer-1-litre
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/mapei-adhesive-keraquick-white-tile-adhesive

As it is not possible to remove the splashback, the only adhesive we have that is guaranteed to work on steel is the BAL Singlepart Fast Flex. The surface will need thoroughly degreasing before applying the adhesive but no further preperation will be required. The adhesive is extremely flexible and as such the grouting will require an additional additive:

hat would be the drying time expected with a 3 - 4mm bed thickness?
We would not recommend this adhesive for a tile of that size. It would be better to use a cement based adhesive for extra grip strength and enhanced drying time, please take a look at https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-uniflex-white-wall-floor-tile-adhesive-20kg
Kind regards,
Walls and Floors
We would always recommend a separate grout as depending on the area, the performance of adhesive when used as grout is unpredictable. Being designed for a specific purpose, grouts have better anti-mould properties and moisture. A good one to go for, which is suitable for any situation is the Mapei Ultracolour Plus Range:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/mapei-ultracolour-plus-grout

Walls and Floors
This product is the adhesive for fixing wall tiles. If you have a question relating to a particular tile, please post on the tiles page. Alternatively, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Regards,
Walls and Floors
We would not recommend adding anything to a ready mixed adhesive as it could harm the consistency and reduce the bond strength. Instead, depending on the surface you are tiling to or the material you are fixing we would advise to purchase a grey cement based adhesive such as Standard Flex (slow set) or Kwik-Flex (rapid set):
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-standard-flex-grey-tile-adhesive
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-kwik-flex-grey-floor-tile-adhesive
If you would like further assistance in choosing the correct adhesive for your project, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to help.
Regards,
Walls and Floors
This adhesive is heat resistant up to 90oC. It can therefore be used for areas subject to moderate heat such as behind a gas hob or a gas/electric fireplace. If you are tiling around an open fire or wood burner, we'd recommend upgrading to the Palace heat resistant adhesive:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/palace-heat-resistant-tile-adhesive-10-kg
Regards,
Walls and Floors
The average coverage is 6-7 sqm per tub, but this is dependant on the tile and trowel size being used and how flat the walls are. 3 buckets should be ample for most situations but if you would like to discuss your project in more detail, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730.
Kind Regards
