Sealing, cleaning and maintenance

For a matt finish:

Sealer: We recommend sealing these tiles with LTP Mattstone Tile Sealer or LTP Mattstone H20 Tile Sealer. Both sealers fill the open pores in the surface, leaving the tile in its natural appearance.

Cleaning and aftercare: To keep these tiles clean, we recommend LTP Waxwash. It contains a trace of linseed oil which will help to repair and maintain the sealer without altering the finish.

For a satin to gloss finish:

Sealer: We recommend sealing these tiles with LTP Glaze Protector. The glossiness slightly increases with every application, depending on the desired appearance and can be applied up to a maximum of 6 coats. It's for dry areas and internal use only.

Cleaning and aftercare: Regularly use LTP Floorshine to increase the sheen and repair old worn sealer.

Question logo
Are these tiles pre sealed at the factory? Or are they needing sealing prior to fixing to avoid adhesive and grout stains
William Miller | 13 Oct 2019

Answer logo
Hi William

These tiles are not sealed, and rarely require it in normal conditions due to their low porosity. However, if they are to be used in heavy traffic areas, areas prone to water or spillages or for external use, or they are to be grouted with a heavily pigmented grout (brown, charcoal, black etc) we would recommend sealing them with the LTP Mattstone during installation.

Hi. Would these tiles be suitable in a wetroom area?
Angela Hall | 17 Sep 2019

Answer logo
Hi Angela

These tiles have good slip resistance so would be fine for use in a wetroom. However being unglazed clay, we would recommend they are sealed with a couple of coats of the LTP MattStone H20 to ensure they remain resistant to staining:

Hi, are these anti slip tiles?
Selina Berry | 5 Sep 2019

Answer logo
Hi Selina

Most clay quarry tiles such as this, due to the way they are manufactured, do have a textured surface. These tiles, in particular, have an R12 anti-slip rating, so suitable for all internal domestic and commercial areas for both wet and dry conditions.

We would recommend obtaining a sample to ensure the finish is suitable for your intended area. If you wish to discuss your project in more detail or to arrange samples or a quotation, please call our Sales Team on 01536 314730, and they will be more than happy to help you.

Answer logo
Hi Haydn

Yes, these are the same tile from the same supplier. Bear in mind, however, that depending on when you purchased the original tiles, due to the production process there may be a slight variation in shade and/or texture to our current stock. We would advise obtaining a sample to ensure you are happy with the finish before placing your final order.

Are these quarry tiles suitable for a front pathway?
Liesbeth | 5 Jul 2019

Hi Liesbeth

Yes, they are. Being made from unglazed clay means they are frost resistant and the natural textures give a good grip in wet conditions. But we would still advise obtaining a sample to ensure the texture is suitable for your personal requirements, before making your final decision.

Question logo
Hello, how suitable would these quarry tiles be for a bathroom floor?
Holly Thomson | 30 Apr 2019

Answer logo
Hi Holly

Natural Quarry tiles are good for bathrooms. Once sealed, they will not be affected by standing water,
and they have good anti-slip properties but we would still recommend obtaining a sample to ensure the finish is suitable for your personal requirements, before making your final decision.

We recommend sealing with the LTP Mattstone both before and after grouting to ensure they are sufficiently protected and to seal the grout to prevent discolouration:

Hi I am searching for a quarry tile Cimone Red from Italy, size 150x150 ?
Jane Butler | 26 Feb 2019
0
Answer logo
Hi Jane,

"Cimone" is not a range we are familiar with. It is a region in Italy that the tile could have been produced in or was merely named after. Our Quarry Red range of tiles are manufactured in Italy and may be along the line of flooring you are looking for, but we would recommend obtaining samples to compare, before making your final decision.

Alternatively, if you can email an image to our sales team, sale@wallsandfloors.co.uk, we will do our best to match the style as best as possible.

Hello, we've just had these tiles laid and grouted, and now need to clean them (general dust from other works) before sealing. Vacuum, then mild soapy water? Thanks

Answer logo
Hi Pete,

Just a damp mop (water only) would be ok to remove loose dust. However, for general dirt, we would suggest the LTP Grimex, and if you have any grout or building cement residues, they would require a clean with the LTP Grout Stain Remover:

A piece of cake with buttercream was dropped by accident onto my quarry tiles on the veranda, and probably also stepped on. I tried to remove the stain with Flash, no luck, then white spirit, no luck and also hot water and fairy liquid. Can you please help? These tiles have been there since I believe 1927 - and are perfect. Thank you very much.
Elisabeth Lord | 4 Sep 2018

Answer logo
Hi Elisabeth

If the stain has penetrated the surface of the tile, the best chance of removal is a combination of the LTP Fullers Earth (not on the website but available to order through our sales team on 01536 314730) and the LTP Spot Stain Remover.

The Spot Stain Remover should break down the stain and the Fullers Earth will draw it out of the capillaries of the tile. The area will then require cleaning with the LTP Grimex before resealing with the LTP Mattstone sealer, which will offer protection against future staining:

Being a full bodied clay, these tiles are naturally heat resistant. The can be used on hearths and woodburner/stove surrounds. If installing in an area of excessive heat, we would recommend fixing with the Palace Heat Resist adhesive:

Question logo
Do the quarry tiles need sealing regularly or does the initial sealing give them enough protection ?
Thanks !
Sally Maw | 7 Jun 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Sally,

Quarry tiles have a low moisture absorption rate, however aid grout clean-off or if being used in heavy traffic areas (kitchen, hallways etc) we would advise giving them a coat of the LTP Mattstone sealer before grouting:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/ltp-cleaning-protecting-ltp-mattstone-h20-tile-sealer

We would recommend checking the seal periodically to ensure the tile is fully protected. However we have found that with the correct maintenance with a pH neutral cleaner (LTP Waxwash), no further applications of sealer would be required for a further 4-5 years... maybe even longer:

Question logo
Hi, I have an open porch, a step up, that has these tiles. They need replacing but the current ones have tiles that are rounded to one side specifically to the edges. These are all the same. How do I achieve a neat edge? Would really prefer something more modern but they are partly open to the elements (in a porch area) so need to be quite strong, able to stand the outdoors, cold temps, etc. What adhesive /grout would I need? Was going to tile over top of existing tiles. Any suggestions welcome?
Shirley | 6 May 2018

Answer logo
Hi Shirley

If you already have tiles that are down which are not in good condition, we would not recommend tiling on them directly. Instead, remove them and tile directly to the concrete base, using a flexible cement based adhesive and grout:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-uniflex-white-wall-floor-tile-adhesive-20kg
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/norcros-4-into-1-grout

These tiles do not have a finished edge, but one can be achieved using a diamond profile tool and polishing pads. Alternatively to add a modern looking anti-slip edge to them, you may also like to consider the use of a steel stair nosing such as this:

Hello,
Re: traditional red quarry tile 7573 .... These tiles have a chamfered edge Please can you advise
if this has a specific purpose, how does it affect the grouting and final appearance?
Thank you
Maureen Clarke | 1 May 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Maureen,

The tiles are made in a larger format with an imprinted grid system. The tiles are then cut leaving the chamfered edge. This technique means the tile is left with a neater edge rather than a sawn edge. When grouting the height of the grout will sit at the base of the chamfer to produce a more uniform and defined finish.

Yes these tiles can be used in a bathroom. Being natural baked clay, they do have a low moisture absorption rate, however a coat of the LTP Mattstone will prevent water marks from long standing water:

Hi Jane,

These tiles are fine to be laid just as they are. However in heavy foot traffic areas or areas prone to moisture and spillages, they could benefit from a coat of the LTP Mattstone sealer. This will seal the tile without altering the overall appearance. We also do the LTP Glaze Protector which will not only protect the tile, but will also give them a permanent "just mopped" look which can be further enhanced by applying up to 6 coats:

Answer logo
Hi Jill,

These tiles are fine to be used in a porch. They will need to be sealed once laid and the most commonly used sealer is https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/ltp-cleaning-protecting-ltp-mattstone-tile-sealer as this will not affect the appearance of the tile at all once dried in. While they don’t have a smooth surface they are not graded to be anti-slip due to their manufacturing process.
