What are porcelain paving slabs?

Porcelain paving slabs are dense, low-porosity outdoor tiles designed for exterior use, offering far greater strength and stain resistance than natural stone. They're vitrified during manufacture, which gives them their durability and resistance to water, frost, and weathering.

Where can they be used?

Patios, garden paths, courtyards, roof terraces, pool surrounds, and driveways are all common applications, provided the sub-base is properly prepared. For driveways specifically, 20mm slabs paired with an engineered sub-base are needed to handle vehicle loads.

What anti-slip rating do I need?

Look for the anti-slip rating filter when browsing — R9 suits sheltered, low-moisture areas, while R10–R11 is recommended for exposed patios, pool surrounds, and anywhere that gets regularly wet. (Note: add real R9/R10/R11 product counts once confirmed against current site filters.)

How should they be installed?

A stable, compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed are essential — spot bedding isn't recommended, as it can lead to cracking or movement over time. Priming slurry should be applied to the back of every slab to improve adhesion, and joints should be kept consistent throughout. Falls should be built in to prevent standing water. Can they go over an existing concrete base?

In most cases, yes — as long as the concrete is sound, level, and free of cracks or drainage issues. Any movement or damage in the existing base should be repaired first, since problems underneath will eventually show through the new surface.

Do they need sealing?

No ongoing sealing is required. The low porosity of porcelain means it naturally resists staining and algae growth, so regular cleaning is the main maintenance task — a broom to clear debris, then a wash with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner is usually enough.

Are they frost-resistant for UK winters?

Yes — the same low water absorption that makes porcelain stain-resistant also protects it from freeze-thaw damage, which is what causes many natural stone pavers to crack over harsh winters.

How many slabs do I need per m²?

For 600x600mm slabs, each covers 0.36m² — roughly 3 slabs per m². For larger formats like 900x600mm or 1200x600mm, check the individual product page for exact coverage, and order an extra 10% across all sizes to allow for cuts around edges and borders.
