#CountdownToChristmas 3 Weeks – Make an Entrance

christmas countdown hallway ideas

With just three weeks left in the Countdown to Christmas, you’re probably thinking about making a big impression on your festive guests. Each week in the lead up to the big day, I’m showing you decorating ideas for different rooms throughout the house. This week, I’m going to show you how to ‘make an entrance’ your friends and family will love. Here are some ideas for freshening up the garden path and the hallway of your home.

Most people, when it comes to decorating, seem to forget that the first real impression guests get of a home starts on the outside – with the front garden, and the front door.

Rejuvenate your door

The door is the first thing that greets you when you get home, so make sure you keep it looking fresh and inviting!

Got a wooden door? Although charming and traditional, wooden paints sometimes fade in the sun. The paint can even chip and peal. If this is the case, sand your door down and give it a fresh lick of paint! For a refreshing change, why not go for a different colour? Try brightening up your kerb appeal by shifting from black to red.

Once you’re happy with your door, decorate it with an eye-catching reef, to help staple some festive fun into the face of your home. Perfect for greeting your wintry guests as they come round baring gifts!

Bring the garden path to life

If you’re lucky enough to have a little path leading from the path to your front door, make sure you keep it looking stylish and interesting! Plain concrete slabs aren’t very inspiring to come home to at the end of every day, and they aren’t going to impress your Christmastime visitors.

For a traditional, period look, I recommend creating a stunning Victorian garden path. There are a tonne of exciting Victorian tile designs to choose from – made from clay, and available in a host of different colours. Choose from squares, hexagons and triangles, and piece together a striking period-patterned display, to guide guests up to your front door.

For added kerb appeal, buy a couple of faux potted trees and stand them on either side of the door. Dress with battery-powered outdoor fairy lights for extra festive sparkle.

Charming touches for the hallway

Once you step into your home, you don’t want to be greeted with a plain, bare space that stretches away from you like a hospital corridor. You want to be faced with something warm, homely and inviting. You want to see something that’s lived in.

Adding a coat rack to the wall is both a practical and fantastic way of making a home look more – well – homely. Make sure yours carries a mix of scarves, hats and accessories to create a bustling, varied look – but try to keep a hook or two free for guests. For the benefit of having extra storage above your hooks, try this Bonnie Wall Shelf from Loaf.com…

Adding a wooden bench against the wall provides a place to sit whilst you slip off your shoes, but the crevice underneath also provides the perfect place to line up a row of footwear. It keeps them tucked neatly out of the way, whilst still adding to that lived-in aesthetic. This Shoe Storage Bench from Within has slots for storing shoes built in!

Alternatively, you could go for a nice white bench for a fresh, wintry look…

If you’ve got the width to play around with, try butting a table or half-table up against the wall. It’ll provide the perfect place to plonk your mail down on. But also, a great place to sit a vase of flowers or an indoor plant. Fake or fresh – your choice. But florals are a big 2016 trend, and a bouquet can help to add a welcoming, colourful warmth to any room in the house.
