Step 1 – Measure Up

Measure your wall space where you will be installing the moulding to determine the length which it needs to be cut.

Transfer this measurement onto the moulding by making a mark with your pencil.

Step 2 – Determine your Mitre Angle

There is a simple sum you can use to determine the angle at which you will need to mitre. Take the angle of your corner, and divide it by the number of pieces of moulding that will be creating that angle. For example, a standard corner in a room is 90 degrees, and if you’re using two pieces of moulding to create this, you need to do 90 divided by 2, which equals 45. So, you need to mitre at a 45-degree angle for a clean, smooth finish.

Step 3 – Cutting your Moulding

If you are working on an internal corner, you will need to cut the ends at a 45-degree angle inwards. If you are cutting for an external corner, you will need to cut the ends at a 45-degree angle outwards.

For a perfect angle, use a mitre box by placing the rail into the box, then lining up the measured mark you made earlier on with the correct angle at which you need to cut.

Cut the moulding along your measured mark using a fine-tooth saw.

Step 4 – Cutting for Staircases

When installing moulding along staircases, you need to determine the angle of the stairs’ ascent. There are a plethora of stair calculators online today that are easy to use and are perfect for working out the exact angle.

Use this angle to cut the ends of your rail so they align properly along the incline.

Step 5 – Attach your Moulding

Please follow our “How to Install Trepanel Style®” guide for an in-depth breakdown to do this. This guide details everything from full wall panel installations to dado rail tips and tricks.

For a simple rundown, you will need to measure and mark along your walls where you want to install the moulding, and then use our Mapei Super Grip Panel Adhesive to adhere it in place.

Fill in any gaps or holes with filler or decorators’ caulk, sanding the surface smoothly when dry. Yhrm paint and decorate as you wish!
