DESCRIPTION

A unique and increasingly popular contemporary multi-coloured, rustic natural slate mosaic, Ledgestone Splitface Mosaic Tiles are made of pieces of shaded natural slate, of different sizes and thicknesses. These pieces are bonded together to produce a highly modern textural, undulating form, which can be used in both interior and exterior schemes. Use these Split Face Tiles to create a feature wall or a kitchen splashback.

What's special about these tiles?

> Ideal for creating a characterful textured feature wall

> Lovingly made by hand

> Perfect for injecting the natural look into a home

> Suitable for use around a wood burner

> Made from sought after natural slate

Treatment and maintenance

To help keep these tiles nice and clean, we suggest using LTP Grout Stain Remover. Natural stone tends to be slightly porous, so we recommend sealing your fantastic new tiles with either LTP Grout and Tile Protector or LTP Mattstone Sealer. To keep your tiles looking fresh and new, apply LTP Waxwash Maintenance.

Using around a wood burner

Lots of our customers have used these tiles around a wood burner with great feedback! If you're going to do this, we recommend using a heat resistant adhesive such as Palace Heat Resistant Tile Adhesive

Where to use these tiles (are where not to)

These tiles are perfect for most of the wall spaces throughout your home. Due to the nature of these natural slate split face tiles, we do not recommend for use in shower areas or areas that receive direct water to the surface. The manufacturing process of these linear slate tiles can leave very small joints that are difficult to completely seal

I am considering using the Ledgestone rustic split face tiles around a wood burner. I have received a sample and they are what we are looking for. However I am not sure how easy they would be to cut to size - please can you advise. Thank you.

Hi Jo

These tiles can be cut quite easily with an electric cutter. This can be a wet cutter or an angle grinder with a suitable stone cutting blade:

Question logo
Do these tiles need grouting after fitting or just sealing
John | 27 Feb 2019
0
Answer logo
Hi John,

These tiles are designed to be butted together as close as possible, so do not require grouting. Being handmade, there can be minor gaps present due to slight irregularities in the size. If after fixing they are very noticeable, grout can be pointed in if needed, but this is optional, and most customers choose to leave them ungrouted.

If you do choose to apply any grout, it is essential that the tiles are sealed with the LTP Mattstone before installing the grout.

Question logo
Hi. I want to use these in my cloakroom wall. Is it suitable ???
Maryam | 21 Jan 2019

Answer logo
Hi Maryam,

Yes, these tiles will be suitable. They can be used in any internal dry areas from kitchens, cloakrooms and even feature walls in lounges and dining rooms.

Due to their weight, they cannot be installed onto plaster or plaster skim, but can go directly onto bare plasterboard, render or a tile backer board such as Hardie Backer:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/hardiebacker-board-james-hardie

We recommend they are fitted with a cement based adhesive and finish with a coat of either the LTP Mattstone, or the LTP Colour Intensifier:

Question logo
How do you recommend laying these tiles? Are they laid on top of one another or are they laid as a stretcher bond?
Angela Williams | 17 Jan 2019
0
Answer logo
Hi Angela,

They can be laid stacked, however once completed, it will be noticeable that they have been laid in columns. Therefore the recommended and most common layout is to lay them brick or random bond which is much more seamless and in keeping with the intended split-face design.

Before fixing we would advise loose-laying the tiles to check the finished appearance before fixing.

Hi i am looking to tile an internal lounge wall do they need intensifier after putting up or can be left ,or anything else thankyou
MARK AUSTIN | 22 Nov 2018

Answer logo
Hi Mark,

We would recommend sealing any natural stone regardless of where they are installed to in case of wetting from cleaning or accidental spillages down the wall. If you do not want to alter the appearance, instead of the Colour Intensifier, the LTP Mattstone can be used as an alternative which when dry, will leave the tiles with their natural look:

Question logo
Hi - how would you recommend fixing these to an external garden wall? Thanks
John Hoxton | 5 Jul 2018

Answer logo
Hi John,

These tiles can be laid directly to brick. If it is a retaining wall, it would re recommended that a damp-proof membrane is placed down the back to prevent sulfates from sinking through the wall and attacking the adhesive. If the wall is out of true or requires bringing to a level, you may wish to consider rendering first.

The tiles have uneven backs so we would advise a back skim of adhesive as well as serating the adhesive to the wall with a 10x10mm notched trowel (depending on the surface flatness. You would require a flexible adhesive such as the Stand Flex and the tiles would need sealing with the LTP Colour Intensifier:

https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/ltp-cleaning-protecting-ltp-tile-colour-intensifier-11264

Question logo
Hi
Ive given my builder a sample of this tile and he is a little concerned about the straightness of the edges and how they will butt up together ?
Paul | 2 Jun 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Paul

These tiles are handmade so naturally there will be some minor variations in size and shape. The tiles are intended to be butted up and manually adjusted to minimise any gaps that may be present, holding them in place with spacer wedges. Although these gaps are unavoidable, they will be barely noticable on completion if a bit of care and attention is paid to limit the effect. Your builder will find it advantageous to open several boxes and loose lay a good area to gauge the sizes and swap tiles around before fixing.

Question logo
Can I use these tiles stuck to marine ply to create a water wall in a garden?
Les Parker | 31 May 2018

Answer logo
Hi Les

For a successful external tiling project it is recommended to tile onto cement based rendered/screeded surfaces. Wood despite being marine grade will still be susceptible to excessive movement and affects from moisture/frost and is therefore not a recommended substrate for external tiling.

Hi are these ok on outdoors walls
Anthony | 12 Apr 2018

Answer logo
Hi Anthony,

Being Natural Slate these tiles are perfect for external wall cladding. They would need to be laid onto a rendered or brick wall of suitable condition, with the Standflex adhesive, and finished with two coats of the LTP Colour Intensifier sealer. Due to the way the tiles butt up, they do not required grouting, which in turn leaves suitable ventilation to allow water run-off and evaporation after wet weather:

Question logo
Hi Can i Use outdoor? if yes what adhesive do you recommend?
Martin | 2 Apr 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Martin,

These tiles can be used externally, ideally on a rendered surface, but with a bit of preparation, they can also be installed to brick. We recommend the use of a cement based flexible adhesive (spread to the wall and skimmed across the back of the tile) such as StandFlex (slow setting) or KwikFlex (rapid setting):
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-standard-flex-grey-tile-adhesive
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/toolshed-tile-adhesive-kwik-flex-grey-floor-tile-adhesive

Once fixed, we also advise sealing with the LTP Colour Intensifier:

Hi, can these tiles be used outdoors?
Lauren | 21 Feb 2018

Answer logo
Hi Lauren,

These tiles are suitable for external use. They need to be fixed with a flexible adhesive onto a well prepared brick or rendered wall, and sealed with a couple of coats of eith the LTP Mattstone or Colour Intensifier:

Hi can you use these tiles on a fireplace?
Norna squires | 30 Dec 2017

Answer logo
Hi Norna,

These tiles are natural slate so can be used around open fire surrounds or in the fireplace around the likes of a wood burning stove. We would recommend that they are fitted with a heat resistant adhesive such as the Palace Heat Resist:
