I am thinking of using these in my shower - can you attach a shower screen to these and create a waterproof seal with sealant? Thanks
catherine | 15 Aug 2019

Answer logo
Hi Katherine

A shower screen can be installed over these, but to hold it in place it may require screwing. If this is the case the tile will need drilling with a specialist diamond drill bit. Due to the texture of the tile, and baps between the frame and the tile can be filled as normal with silicone.

Another way would be for the screen to be installed and sealed to the wall first, with the tiles cut up against it with a further bead of silicone along the cut edge.

Question logo
i have split face inside my house buy they are not waterproof will yours be waterproof for exterior walls and do you grout them.
John Deary | 20 Jun 2019

Answer logo
Hi John,

These tiles are made from durable porcelain and like the vast majority of tiles are water resistant but not water proof. They have a water absorption rate of below 0.05% making them fine for outdoor use as well as for interior projects. We do strongly suggest the tiles are grouted when installed using a 2mm grout line, a grout like https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/mapei-ultracolour-plus-grout-ultracolour-plus-113-cement-grey-tile-grout-12933 would be a good match but it is ultimately a personal choice.

Kind regards,

Question logo
Hi,
How much should I leave for total thickness of tile and adhesive? Would these be ok to fit straight to an unrendered 7.3N medium density block?
Thanks
Mark
Mark | 9 Apr 2019

Answer logo
Hi Mark

It depends on the trowel you are using to apply the adhesive but the bed depth is unlikely to come out any further than 2-3mm. We also advise a back skim of adhesive on each tile to fill in any voids.

Tiling to blocks is fine but they tend to be very porous, so we would recommend priming the surface with a diluted solution of an SBR primer prior to tile installation:

Question logo
I'm building an outside cooking area using tantalised timber frame with external cement boards covering the frame. Will I be okay to fix these straight to the cement boards and will it be weatherproof.
Dan Andrews | 20 Jul 2018

Answer logo
Hi Dan,

Although the tiles are fine for outdoor use and would stick to the cement boards fine, it is possible that there can still be movement, expansion and contraction in the wooden frame due to environmental changes, which would have an affect on both the cement boards and tiles. It is a British Standards recommendation that external wall tiling is installed to a solid surface such as brick, render or concrete, so while other methods may work, there would be no guarantee as to its longevity.

Question logo
Do these tiles require spacers?
Sarah Harrington | 10 Jul 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Sarah,

When these tiles interlock, there will be a small space for grout at approximately 1mm. Rather than using standard spacer crosses, you will have more flexibility using spacer wedges which allow spacing from 0-5mm:

Hi James,

These tiles are glazed porcelain, so naturally impervious to moisture and frost resistant, so perfectly fine for external use.

Question logo
We are looking at building an outside wall from concrete block, would we need to render the block or seal it prior to adding these tiles?
Toni | 7 May 2018

Answer logo
Hi Toni,

Although it is preferred to render the wall first, it is possible to tile directly onto concrete block following a couple of diluted coats of a suitable SBR Primer to reduce surface porosity, then using a flexible cement based adhesive:

Can you recommend the best adhesive to use for this product please?
Thanks.
Caitlin Baxter | 14 Mar 2018

Answer logo
Hi Caitlin

Due to the size and being Porcelain, you will require a cement based adhesive. Our Standflex is suitable for most substrates with the correct preparation, but if you would like any further guidance, please contact us on 01536 314730 and we will be more than happy to advise you:

Question logo
I am looking to put these tiles on an external brick wall. Do you need to grout in between the tiles or can you lay them without grout (which may look better)? Thanks
Russell Jenks | 22 Feb 2018

Answer logo
Hi Russell,

When the tiles are interlocked together, it leaves a slight gap which we recommend grouting. The colour of which is difficult to match exactly but the Tornado Grey is one of the most popular complimentary colours:

Question logo
Hi, do these tiles need to be sealed and if so is it before or after they are fitted? Thanks
Simone | 12 Feb 2018

Answer logo
Hi Simone

Because these tiles are glazed, they do not require sealing. However depending on the area they are installed, you could aid cleaning and protect the grout by using the LTP Grout & Tile Protector:

Hi Sophie,

These are the same tiles and the same colour, but the lighting is slightly different and so they appear darker.

Question logo
Are these suitable for inside a shower? We are doing a wet room and would like to use this style as a feature wall inside the shower. The are many split face tiles that are not recommended in wet areas
Jasmin Chapman | 17 Jan 2018

Answer logo
Hi Jasmin,

As these tiles are a split face effect made from porcelain rather than natural slate, they are fine to use in a shower area. We do suggest they are fully grouted with an anti mould water resistant grout, in your selected colour.

if i use these in a shower area can they be lead tight together or do you need to space them for grouting?
james | 5 Dec 2017

Answer logo
Hi James

These tiles when interlocked will leave a slight gap. It is recommended to keep the uniform distance of 1-2mm around the tile and fill with grout. Based on past order, the Mapei Ultracolour Anthracite is a very popular choice:

We are looking to put these around our cassette fireplace (Stovax Studio 2), but have been warned away from slate versions of these because of the heat & the glue that holds the slips together. Do your tiles get around this problem somehow?
Tim Brown | 21 Nov 2017

Answer logo
Hello Tim,

These are a slate effect porcelain and don’t contain glue like the natural handmade Split face tiles and are therefore fine for areas of excessive heat. We would recommend fixing them with the Palace Heat Resist adhesive:

How do you finish an edge off where 2 directions would meet at an external 90 angle? Thanks Carl
carl cullotty | 13 Nov 2017

Hi Carl,

A trim can be used to finish and protect the edge. The style of which is down to personal preference but we would recommend the square edge for a neat finish.
