DESCRIPTION
Create a statement floor in your bathroom, kitchen, hallway or lounge with these striking Scintilla Black Pattern Tiles. They have a vintage monochrome design, with aged-effect black and white star shaped patterns. Made from durable ceramic, these tiles have a matt finish with a grid scored into the surface, which you grout into. They're perfect for creating a vintage scheme in an interior space.
What's special about these tiles?
> They have an eye-catching star-shaped geometric pattern
> Slightly aged effect, ideal for creating a vintage look
> Perfect for adding a statement floor into any room
> Suitable for use with underfloor heating
> Made from ceramic so easy to clean
> More scratch and stain resistant than wooden flooring
Grouting into the scored grid
These tiles have a grid scored into their surface. Once you grout these scored lines, each tile looks like four separate tiles. We recommend using 2mm tile spacers between tiles for a groutline consistent with the scored line. When it comes to which grout to use, it comes down to your own personal taste, but customers tend to use a mid grey colour from our Mapei Ultracolour Plus Tile Grout range.
Star Buy product
This is one of our Star Buy products! Our Star Buy products represent fantastic every day low value and are already discounted to our lowest possible price - therefore, discount codes can not be applied to Star Buy products.
An outdoor version
Because this tile is ceramic, it's not frost proof, so cannot be used outdoors. However, we have a similar design - our Astral Tile - which is made from porcelain and therefore can be used outside.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (39)
Thanks for your query.
Grout is a personal choice. With these tiles, if you go for a light grey it will highlight the star over the dark background and if you go for a charcoal or black grout it will enhance the black of the background.
Kind regards

The length of time will depend on what adhesive is used. Some quick setting adhesives can be walked on after 3 hours so would be fine for the wood burner to be set on top, others are slower and can take 24 hours. It will be best to check the info on the adhesive bag as your best guide.
Kind regards
Walls and Floors
These tiles are flooring grade ceramic so should be ok, providing you have 300mm clearance from the base of the appliance to the tile. We would advise that the tiles have 100% coverage of adhesive beneath to ensure there are no voids beneath, to that they can sufficiently support the weight of the burner. It should also be lifted in to place rather than dragged across the surface to ensure the glaze does not scratch.

Walls And Floors
Being ceramic, these tiles only have a slight degree of heat resistance, and would not be recommended for use so close to open fire. For this purpose, we would usually recommend and unglazed porcelain or natural stone.

These tiles are glazed ceramic so sealing is not required. However, as an optional extra, you may wish to consider applying the LTP Glaze Protector after installation, as this will aid cleaning and give the tiles a permanent "just mopped" look:

Could I continue from the floor in to a shower cubicle area with these tiles? Just want to check durability with a water area.
Thank you
These tiles would be durable enough in a shower, however, they are not certified as an anti-slip tile. The matt finish will provide a small amount of grip in wet conditions, but we would strongly advise obtaining a sample to test and ensure it is suitable for your personal requirements, before making your final decision.

I am looking at the scintilla Black star pattern tiles for my bathroom (area of 7m2). Could you please recommend which grout I should use (colour and type). Thanks
The grout colour is entirely down to personal preference. Standard greys tend to be the most popular, but previous customers have used black to match the star pattern, or Chestnut to match the grey/brown worn effect around the edge. To help you choose, we can provide sample colours from our Norcros 4 Into 1 Grout range and would recommend you obtain a sample tile and a selection of colours to compare before making your final decision.

We do charge for samples but when placed online, you will receive a one-time voucher code in your order confirmation, that will deduct the value of the samples from any subsequent order.

The grout colour you go for is entirely down to personal preference, mid to dark greys are the most popular to compliment the pattern. We are able to provide samples from our Norcros 4 Into 1 Grout range, the cost of which can be claimed back against any subsequent order. These tiles are dense ceramic, so can be used in wet areas. However, they are not classified as an anti-slip tile. The matt finish does provide some grip in wet conditions that most customers are comfortable with. However, we would recommend obtaining a sample to ensure the finish is suitable for your personal requirements.

Walls And Floors
Being ceramic, we do not recommend these tiles for external use. If you would like assistance in choosing a suitable alternative, please call our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to assist you.

hole where I am having a wood burning stove fitted will they do the job?
These tiles are a dense ceramic and will be sufficiently heat resistant for around a wood burner. We would recommend fixing the tiles with the Palace Heat Resist Adhesive:

Thank you.
These tiles have an R9 rating. But in the HSE preferred pendulum test, they achieved 43 in the wet footwear simulation (96-4S) and 38 in the barefoot simulation (55-TRL), both of which are classed as low risk.
We would recommend obtaining samples to ensure suitability for your personal requirements and if you require any further information or copies of the PTV certificates, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to help you.

Although porcelain is a slightly denser material, it would not necessarily perform any different to a ceramic in a domestic hallway. The key thing to look for on a tile isn't what it is made from, but the wearing grade. For this tile the grade is 4 meaning it is perfectly suited to any internal domestic situation without being affected by foot traffic in terms of surface abrasion.
We would recommend obtaining a sample to ensure you are happy with the design and finish before making your final decision.

I am looking to use these at the bottom of my fire. Do you think they would look strange if they were not flush to the floor? Would you reccommend anything to go around the edges?
Thanks
Catherine
It should look fine providing you cover the exposed tile edge with our 12mm Square Edge Metal Trim ( https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/bright-silver-trim-12mm )

These tiles would make a very stylish addition to a porch and there would be no issue with damp shoes on them. We would suggest a tile specific cleaner for them though to keep them looking at their best. Try https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/ltp-cleaning-protecting-ltp-porcelain-tile-cleaner-1ltr as the best option for ongoing care and cleaning of your tiles.

These tiles are a dense ceramic which makes them heat resistant and fine for use in heat sensitive areas such as burner surrounds or Agas. We would recommend fixing the tile with a suitable heat resistant adhesive such as the Palace Heat Resist:

The grade is the abrasion/scratch resistance of a tile in normal foot traffic conditions, with grade 5 being the hardest wearing. A grade 4 tile is suitable for all internal domestic situations and can even be used in light commercial areas.
This tile is R9 and the Barolo is R10, however we have had them both PTV tested and they both scored 36+ which means they have a low risk of slipping in wet and dry conditions. For more information PTV results, please follow this link:

Laminate flooring is a floating surface (not fixed) and therefore it would not be recommended to tile on top due to possible movement. Our recommendation would be to remove the laminate, assess the substrate beneath and prepare as required before tiling. In the main image for these Scintilla Black Tiles, we've used White Gloss Rustic Metro Tiles on the wall: https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/rustic-metro-tiles-white-gloss-tiles

These tiles have an R9 anti-slip rating but we have had these tested for a bare foot simulation and it passed the wet test with a low risk classification (PTV 36+), so they are fine for use in bathrooms and wet areas such as shower floors. The certificate is available on request by emailing technicalhelp@wallsandfloors.co.uk. But as with any tile, we would recommend obtaining a sample to ensure you are happy with the colour and finish before purchasing.

Yes, these tile can be used in wet areas. On walls, due to the weight of the tiles and adhesive, as well as the weight limitations of some substrates, we would recommend installing onto the Hardie Backer boards or bare plasterboard with a waterproof tanking kit. For the adhesive, a flexible cement based adhesive would be required:

Also, which gout would you suggest that resembles the colour of the gout in the tiles (reddish?
These tiles can be used on walls. Due to their weight and limitiations of most wall substrates we would recommend they are installed onto a tile backer board such as Hardie Backer:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/hardiebacker-board-james-hardie
The red lines are grout score lines that are intended to be grouted over to give a seamless look and the impression of smaller individual tiles. The colour of grout is down to personal preference but we would advise obtaining a sample of the tile and several grout colour samples from our Norcross 4 Into 1 range to compare before making your final decision:

These tiles can be used on walls. Due to the weight they cannot go onto plaster or plaster skim, but can however be applied directly to bare plasterboard or a tile backer board such as Hardie Backer, using a cement based tiles adhesive:

These tiles are a design on their own and have been designed to replicate original encaustic flooring, which rarely featured border designs. You may be able to make use of the type intended for Victorian style flooring. However the colour will not be an exact match to the shades on the tile so may require a contrasting colour and design:

Yes, these tiles are suitable for use on floors and walls, providing they are fixed with a cement based adhesive and the surface is primed. Here are the links to the adhesive and primer we recommend:

Yes they can. With a full coverage of adhesive, they are fine for gas and electric fires and will also hold the weight of a wood burning stove. However if it is a regularly used open fire, the excessive heat would require a porcelain or natural stone tile.

Walls And Floors
Due to being ceramic, we can only recommend these tiles for internal use. If you would like assistance in choosing a suitable alternative, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to assist you.

I would suggest looking at the customer project pictures for this tile using the thumbnails on the top left of the page. You can see how they have used a metro tile to complement the Scintilla and keep a vintage look. Other customers have paired them with these metro tiles: https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/rustic-metro-tiles-teal-gloss-tiles https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/metro-smooth-200x100-tiles-hatton-cross-smooth-gloss-200x100-grey-tiles https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/rustic-metro-tiles-white-gloss-tiles

This tile would give a small degree of slip resistance in the majority of the bathroom due to its matt finish. For a wet-room floor however, we would not recommend them. For constantly wet barefoot areas, a minimum of R10 is advisable, but samples should be viewed to ensure suitability for your personal requirement. For further assistance and to discuss your project in more detail, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to help you.

These tiles are fine to be used as a “splash back”. We can suggest using LTP Grout and Tile protector as well just to keep the tiles and grout looking fresh, clean and new https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/ltp-cleaning-protecting-ltp-grout-tile-protector-sealer

The tiles are heat resistant and can be used on hearths, surrounds and on the walls of a in a decorative fireplace. They can also but used around gas fires and insulated wood burners. We would recommend fixing with a heat resistant adhesive such has Palace Heat resist:

These tiles are fine for all residential/domestic foot traffic and suitable for use on the floor in wet environments, these tiles have a matt surface giving the tiles a subtle slip resistant finish, and have been used by previous customers on wet room floors with positive feedback, we would recommend you order a sample first though to make sure you are happy with the colour and finish for your particular project.
