Sealing and maintenance

Due to the porosity of natural stone the do require sealing. The need to be given a few coats before grouting and a further coat after to ensure they are well protected.

To keep the tiles their natural colour you can use the LTP Mattstone, but if you require to slightly deepen the colour, the LTP Colour Intensifier can be used as an alternative.

To increase the longevity of the seal, ongoing maintenance and cleaning can be carried out using the LTP Waxwash

Each tile is unique

Due to the natural properties of natural slate, each tile is unique. They will vary slightly in colour and thickness from tile to tile, to give an authentic overall blend when fitted.

I love these slate tiles, we did have several broken but they were replaced no problem, unfortunately with the tile being natural slate, you have to expect this, but walls and floors were super quick to send us replacements.

Are these tiles ok for outdoors?
Natasha Betteridge | 18 Jun 2019

Answer logo
Hi Natasha,

These tiles are made from natural slate and as such are fine for outdoor use due to their frost resistant qualities. If you are looking for a floor tile for an outside project it is worth considering one with an anti-slip surface as well https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/anti-slip-tiles

Question logo
are these tiles suitable for a shower wall/floor and bathroom wall and floor thanks
Kamala Persaud | 5 Feb 2019

Answer logo
Hi Kamala,

Yes, they can. However, due to the combined weight of the tiles and fixing materials, they cannot be installed onto conventional plaster or plasterboard backgrounds. We would recommend boarding the walls with the Hardie Backer boards which are capable of supporting excessive weights. The walls in the direct wet areas will require a coating of the Ardex WPC tanking kit which will make the walls sufficiently waterproof.

Once the tiles are installed, but before grouting, they will also need sealing, either with the LTP Mattstone or the LTP Colour Intensifier depending on your preferred finish. A further application of the sealer can be applied after grouting to ensure the tiles are sufficiently protected and this will also seal the grout to prevent discolouration:

Question logo
Hi, What colour grout would you recommend with these tiles? And does the colour protector (to make them a bit darker) also do the job of sealing the tiles? Thanks Anna
Anna Smith | 2 Sep 2018

Answer logo
Hi Anna,

Although grout colour is down to personal preference, grey grout has always been the most popular colour to complement Black Slate.

With regards to sealing, the LTP Mattstone will leave the tiles their natural shade, however the LTP Colour Intensifier, will slightly deepen the colour. Both of these sealers do not require any pre-treatment before use and can be applied directly to the slate. We would recommend applying the sealer both before and after grouting:

Are these suitable for a hearth under a log burner?
Georgina | 6 Aug 2018

Answer logo
Hi Georgina,

These real slate tiles are fine to bus used in and around a hearth. It would be advisable to use a sealer like https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/ltp-cleaning-protecting-ltp-mattstone-tile-sealer-11256 once they are fitted.

Hi do the farmhouse slate tiles cut the same with a tile disc ?
cutter
Paul | 16 May 2018

Answer logo
Hi Paul

That is correct. A wet cutter is the best option, but you can also use and angle grinder with a blade suitable for slate as a more cost effective method.

Question logo
Hi, thinking of using this for a patio... Can you tell me the slip rating please?
Ms Sarah Barrett | 1 Mar 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Sarah,

These tiles do not have a slip rating as with natural slate tiles, each tile will vary in finish. However they are deemed suitable for external use and the riven will aid the slip resistance in wet condition. We would advise obtaining a sample to ensure you are happy with the finish for your personal requirements.

Question logo
If sealed appropriately, could these be used directly around a bath and shower?
Melissa | 25 Jan 2018

Answer logo
Hi Melissa,

Natural Slate can be used on both floors and walls, providing the walls are correctly prepared. They will need sealing both before and after grouting with the LTP Colour Intensifier and future cleaning should be done with the LTP Stonewash to keep them well protected:

Dear Sir / Madam, I would like to know if you have the 30 x 30 slate tiles, calibrated as in not to rough ones. I have seen the very nice calibrated slate tiles and prefer them to the rougher type. I need 23 sqm.
Hussein | 30 Dec 2017

Answer logo
Hi Hussein,

As an alternative we have the calibrated slate in two finishes, brushed and honed. The brushed has had most of the natural riven removed leaving a more antiqued finished whereas the honed is extremely smooth. Both tiles are gauged to 10mm thick:

Hi William,

These are natural slate tiles so can be used in both internal and external situations. To ensure they are completely weather proof, they require sealing with the LTP Mattstone sealer.
