I note you give a grade 3 rating for wear and tear. Do you think these would be good in a living room that is well travelled in and used a lot? Does furniture mark the tiles easily. Many thanks in advance.
Nassa | 17 Aug 2019

Answer logo
Hi Nassa

These tiles can be used in lounges but we would recommend that they are only walked on with dedicated indoor footwear to eliminate the possibility of the scratching from external grit. Furniture shouldn't cause an issue providing coasters are used beneath the legs and it would be advisable to lift furniture into position, rather than drag them into place.

The wearability of the surface can be increased by applying additional coats of a hard-wearing varnish, such as the Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish.

If you wish to discuss your project in more detail or to arrange samples or a quotation, please call our Sales Team on 01536 314730, and they will be more than happy to help you.

Question logo
Do your cork tiles have to be sealed or varnished for use in a bathroom? Can they be walked on straight away?
Patricia | 19 Jul 2019

Answer logo
Hi Patricia

We do not recommend cork for use in bathrooms due to the possible effects of standing water and high humidity. The risk of water getting behind them can be reduced by further coats of a suitable varnish such as the Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish to seal the joints, as well as a bead of neutral cure silicone around the perimeter, but there is still a chance of damage from expansion in the joints from temperature fluctuations, allowing water to still get through, if the conditions exceed what is advised in our installation guide:

Hi Adam

It depends on the shape and size of the area, but with these and normal tiles, we usually advise around 10% extra.

Hi, we want to install these in a new extension which will have large sliding doors on the back and a large roof light above...will this cause sun damage do you think?
Joanne Moore | 28 May 2019

Answer logo
Hi Joanne

There is a precautionary warning in our fixing guide (link below) that indicates there can be fading in the material if installed in areas of direct sunlight. Another characteristic of any wood-based product is that with the changes in temperature associated with sun contact, the boards can expand which can cause slight gapping at certain times as they contract again.

Question logo
can you use cork with underfloor heating?
steve turner | 3 May 2019

Answer logo
Hi Steve

These cork boards can be used on underfloor heating but it is important that the floor temperature does not exceed 27 oC.

We recommend that if an electric underfloor heating system is used, the cables are encased in 8-10mm of a levelling compound before installing the cork:

Question logo
Hi,
Can these be used on a bathroom wall instead of tiles in a shower space that (needless to say) gets very wet?
Thanks
anja | 12 Nov 2018

Answer logo
Hi Anja,

Cork can be adversely affected by excessive moisture and humidity, so we would not recommend these tiles for a shower.

Ceramic and porcelain are better suited for use in wet areas, so if you would like to discuss possible alternatives, please call our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to help you.

Question logo
would it be better to glue joins if using over underfloor heating, and also because of the temperature differences in a bathroom?
Also is the cork painted white to get this affect?
tjanks Morag
Morag | 30 Sep 2018

Answer logo
Hi Morag,

The joints can be glued although it is not essential. The cork is pigmented to give a lighter colour and then an acrylic varnish is applied to seal. These need to be properly protected from moisture, so if you do decide on using in a bathroom, we would advise applying 2 further coats of a wood floor varnish after installation, to unsure the joints a properly sealed before the bathroom is used. However we do not recommend their use in areas subject to moisture and humidity. Please see our fixing guide for further information:

can i use them over electic mat underfloor heating?
Morag | 30 Sep 2018

Answer logo
Hi Morag,

Our 150w heating cables can be used, but they need to be encased within a minimum 10mm of leveling compound and the temperature on the thermostat limited to 27C to prevent excessive expansion and curling within the cork.

Although we do not stock them, we are also able to obtain 100w foil based systems, designed specifically for soft floor. Please call our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be able to obtain a quote from the supplier for you.

Are the cork tiles suitable with underfloor heating?
Nick | 29 Sep 2018

Answer logo
Hi Nick,

There are specific foil types of heating that can be used with laminate type flooring which we can obtain from our heating supplier. Please call our sales team on 01536 314730 and they can obtain a quote for you based on your requirements. Our 150w heating cables can also be used, but they need to be encased within a minimum 10mm of levelling compound and the temperature on the thermostat limited to 27C to prevent excessive expansion and curling within the cork.

Question logo
Hello,
how the cork tiles behave after walking on them in high heels? Are they hard enough to not get the holes?
Ewa | 5 Sep 2018
0
Answer logo
Hello and thank you for your enquiry,

These cork boards are made of three layers, standard cork on the base, moisture resistant MDF through the centre and a layer of sealed decorative cork on top. They are sufficiently scratch resistant to standard indoor foot traffic with bare feet or appropriate indoor footwear (slippers or soft soled shoes). Due to the 3 layers, holes are extremely unlikely, however point loading from a stud or stiletto heel, can cause indentation or surface abrasion.

We would recommend obtaining a sample so that you may test before deciding if this type of flooring is suitable for your personal circumstances.

Question logo
Hello,
Does the floor need screening (complete levelling) before laying these tiles? If not, what kind of subfloor is necessary? Is it possible to order a free sample of this product? And lastly, the notes mention damage if direct sunlight reaches the floor. How long (in years or months) would it be before this damage could happen?

Many thanks
Gigi | 7 Apr 2018

Answer logo
Hi Gigi,

We would recommend getting the floor as level as possible before laying (within 1-2mm). If you have a screed already in place, we recommend the use of a latex levelling compound to prepare the surface as best as possible:
https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/bostik-low-odour-screed-levelling-compound

Sun damage can occur in two ways and although damage is not guaranteed to happen, it is a possibility, depending on the area. Firstly they can fade in colour. So if used in a conservatory for example you may notice colour fade within the first year or season cycle. Secondly, due to being a soft flooring, they can expand and contract with large temperature variations. This can cause them to warp and start to separate at the joins.

However in normal areas, such as lounges, dining rooms and bedroom they are perfectly fine as they would normally be sufficiently shielded from most direct sunlight and would not be subject the the extreme temperatures that would be generated in the likes of a conservatory or sunroom.

Samples are available at a reduced cost and free delivery, by clicking the blue sample button, alternative, please contact our sales team on 01536 314730 and they will be more than happy to assist you.

Although designed a dry layed flooring solution, these cork boards can also be installed on walls using the Corkabond adhesive:

Question logo
Are these tiles suitable for a bathroom floor?
Christina | 16 Feb 2018
0
Answer logo
Hi Christina,

They can but you need to ensure that moisture cannot get behind them. They need laying on a moisture resistant underlay, we then advise that they receive a further two coats of a water-based varnish, such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor varnish, and the edges where they meet the wall are silicone sealed.

Question logo
Have these tiles been pre-sealed with Polyurethane? Also, are they good for flooring? The description suggests so, but the grading is 0 which says not suitable for flooring.
Alice | 4 Feb 2018

Answer logo
Hi Alice,

These cork boards are sealed with a water based acrylic varnish. The grade has been amended to 3 which makes the suitable for most domestic floors including lounges, dining rooms, bedrooms and kitchens.

When fitting, we recommend a further two coats of a water based varnish which will seal the joints and give them additional protection against wear and staining.
